The multi-million-shilling Grand Manor Hotel located in Nairobi's Gigiri area is set to be demolished following court orders.
In a ruling, the High Court says the hotel owned by Nairobi billionaire Praful Kumar poses a threat to the adjacent United Nations offices and the United States Embassy among others.
The court has approved the demolition of the hotel following a case filed by the Gigiri Village Association.
The association argues that the hotel was constructed against security regulations and requirements of controlled development in the upmarket estate.
“This proposed development will be a security risk as it will overlook the UN, American Embassy, Botswana High Commission and Moroccan Embassy. We believe it will infringe on our rights as residents to freedom of movement by causing massive traffic jams, pollution, noise and extra-human traffic for a high end (Blue Zone as per Nairobi County) residential area,” says Gigiri Residents Association chairman David Awori.
In August, detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Kumar after he allegedly attempted to bribe Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko with Sh1 million for him to clear the hotel.
The tycoon was charged with three counts of bribery and was freed on Sh1 million bond or Sh500,000 cash bail.
