The groundbreaking ceremony for construction of 500,000 affordable housing units will be held in a week's time, President Kenyatta has announced.
Kenyatta says the launch comes after Members of Parliament approved the establishment of Kenya Housing Development Fund, which will be the anchor fund for the ambitious project.
“The fund will be the primary off-taker of approved building developments designed and implemented under the program,” President Kenyatta said during his Jamhuri Day speech on Wednesday.
“In the last twelve months we have laid an appropriate legal and policy foundation that provides the platform to transform our housing sector for the better,” he adds.
In September, President Uhuru struck a deal for construction of 100,000 low-cost housing units with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The government estimates that Sh1.3 trillion will be used to deliver 500,000 houses under the program by 2022.
Affordable housing is one of President Kenyatta's big four agenda, which also include manufacturing, food security, and universal healthcare.

This projects should be done outside Nairobi just in nearby cities introduce good transportation..Rail..super highway. Maximum 1 hour normal drive..from basic calculations it looks expensive and will attract our First class CORRUPT people.
This is the latest scam from that bottomless pit of ignorance in statehouse.
All government corporations in the jubilee government are corruption dens used to waste and syphon taxes.
I agree.%
I trust that these houses will trully be for the law income people.Yes laws and polic iui es should be in place to see that comes to fruition.Lets not let fat cats buy them, them raise rent, thus defeating the goal.

Good intentions need to be backed with good actions to safeguard the downtrodden; otherwise the cartels will snatch the project and the housing from those intended for. This launching of new projects at an alarming rate is only compounding the fight on corruption. The government should take a pause and take account of the projects already underway otherwise it is field day for the corrupt. There is always the urge to do more but addressing immediate threat to Mwananchi's future is more important than building things for them. There would be no rushed need for low-cost housing if the economy was well, people earned decent wages and cost of living was reasonable. It starts with creating a low class, low wages, low standards of education, low laws for the high and mighty, and high laws for the lowly, low standard goods, and we down we go...as Kaleo sings
While Kenya was Cheap and Asleep in Corruption:
CNN reports that "CHINA built more skyscrapers in 2018 than anywhere else in the world -- or at any other time in history, according to data released by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) on Wednesday.
A total of 88 buildings measuring 200 meters (656 feet) or above were completed in cities across China this year. The figure sets a new benchmark for annual skyscraper construction in a single country, and is almost seven times higher than the 13 completions recorded in the US, which ranked a distant second." Amazing!!!
