Nestled atop the Riat Hills in Kisumu lies Kanyakwar, a breathtaking vantage point that offers a glimpse of the magnificent Lake Victoria and Kenya's third-largest city which gracefully embraces the lake from all angles.
The lake is known locally as Nam Lolwe. This expansive body of water serves as a unifying force, connecting the four Nyanza counties - Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, and Busia - that border it, as well as fostering links between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. While Lake Victoria is renowned for its thriving fishing industry, its potential as a bustling transportation hub has been somewhat overlooked. However, this may soon change as the Kisumu County government unveils ambitious plans to transform the city into a hub centred around the lake, with a deliberate focus on modernity.
In a recent interview, Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga discussed a forward-thinking strategy that intends to transform the lakeside city into a prominent global destination. Meanwhile, local leaders work to boost the region's economic and transport network through the development of its blue economy, turning its waterfront into viable assets through innovative plans. Despite several challenges, progress has clearly been occurring, as evidenced by the inauguration of MV Uhuru II by President William Ruto last week.
The county government has instructed tuk-tuk drivers to refrain from transporting passengers, restricting their services exclusively to luggage transport. The tuk-tuk operators have met the directive with resistance. Enhancing city development requires effective strategies to combat heavy traffic and ensuing congestion. Urban planning must prioritize the provision of an efficient public transportation network to navigate overcrowded streets. Affordable and suitably designed housing should be established while creating distinct trading regions and recreational spaces.
Schools and healthcare facilities should also be readily available to residents. Additionally, security, reliable water supply, and a comprehensive transport network with pedestrian walkways are essential. The city manager emphasized the significance of adhering strictly to urban regulations in order to prevent fraudulent approvals and controls that disrupt city plans and strain existing infrastructure and amenities.
No rail no rail, no rail no peace! They will burn it down anyway!!!
