Kenyan boxer Brian Agina, who participated in the just concluded 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, has gone missing.
Agina reportedly went missing from the Athletes Village on Sunday night, hours after the event concluded.
The President of the Boxing Association of Kenya John Kameta said the matter had been reported to the Chief de Mission Barnabas Korir and to the Australian police, who have since launched search for the pugilist.
He said that the 18-year old was last seen leaving the Athletes Village carrying a small back pack without any form of identification.
“It was discovered today (Monday) morning that one of our players was missing. The search began immediately and the coaches also reported to the CDM and also called me."
“He has left his big bag in the village. Yesterday when I came to the village I was denied access. He (Agina) was a little bit worried about his performance but I talked and encouraged him since he is still young and has a bright future ahead,” Kameta said.
Agina is reported to have borrowed USD 100 (around Sh10, 000) from Olympian Ben Gicharu to buy headsets prior to leaving.
“We still have his passport with us. It has become a challenge for us to deal with civilian boxers. We thought holding their passports would prevent them from running way but that is not possible. We need to get a way to deal with them,” said Kameta.
Kenya High Commissioner to Australia Isaiah Kabira said authorities are doing all they can to trace him.
"Efforts are still being made to contact him and I hope and trust that he is safe," Kabira said.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Australian authorities are monitoring two unnamed athletes who are being suspected to have made plans to disappear.
If my memory serves me right, this is not the first time a Kenyan boxer has missed camp in australia.
My guess is that the fellow is safe. He is one of the 54% kenyans hoping to escape poverty and live in another country...
