Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has extended his support to the Kenyan women's Amputee team following their remarkable performance at the inaugural Amputee Women's World Cup in Colombia, where they secured fourth place.
The commitment came during a Celebration Luncheon For Ladies held at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi, marking their first meeting since a controversial incident at Frankfurt Airport. During the celebration, Murkomen addressed the widely circulated video that had portrayed the team as stranded in Germany during their layover. He expressed his dismay at the misleading nature of the footage, revealing that neither the team members nor officials were aware they were being recorded in a manner that suggested they were abandoned.
"I was shocked. Upon contacting the traveling official, I discovered that everyone involved was unaware of the situation," Murkomen says. "They only learned about their supposed predicament through social media."
The Sports CS firmly emphasizes the Ministry's commitment to supporting national teams competing internationally. He asserts that no Kenyan team would ever depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport without adequate resources, warning that such negligence would result in immediate disciplinary action against responsible officials. Murkomen also clarifies that international layovers are standard practice and further confirms that the team received VIP treatment during their connection wait.
The celebratory atmosphere at the luncheon, where the team welcomed Murkomen with vibrant performances, stood in stark contrast to the concerning narrative presented in the viral video. Murkomen has made a personal pledge to support the team members in their endeavors. Although government policy typically reserves cash awards for top-three finishes in international competitions, the CS has announced his intention to reward the team's outstanding achievement before their scheduled meeting with President William Ruto.
