Homa Bay Man Buried Without Coffin Over Stinginess Claims

Authorities in North-East Kadem, Kenya, are investigating the burial of a 40-year-old man who was laid to rest without a coffin, following claims that his family refused to give him a customary funeral due to unresolved disputes.
The man died on a Sunday evening after being taken to hospital in critical condition. According to area chief Onyango Akal, the family declined to take his body to the mortuary, citing financial difficulties and unwillingness to cover related expenses. Instead, they instructed that the body be brought directly to the family homestead for burial.
Witnesses say the burial took place without the usual funeral preparations. The man’s body was reportedly wrapped in a blanket and interred without a coffin. No food was served, and there were no formal ceremonies, which marked a clear departure from the region’s customary funeral practices.
Relatives have reportedly explained that the deceased had been absent from family matters and had not contributed to earlier funerals, leading to their decision. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned members of the deceased’s family for questioning, citing possible violations of legal or ethical standards.
The investigation aims to determine whether the burial process contravened public health regulations or customary obligations. Odungi Randa, a representative of the Luo Council of Elders, said the burial aligned with traditional practices, noting that coffins are not a historical requirement in Luo culture.
“There was nothing like someone being placed in a coffin,” he stated. “One would only be wrapped in a white linen and be buried. There was not much spending.”
He added that, traditionally, food was brought by neighbours, not prepared by the bereaved household.
