Doctors in Canada have rejected plans to raise their salaries, saying that they are being paid "too much."
More than 500 doctors and over 150 medical students have reportedly signed a public letter rejecting the pay hike.
"We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations," they declare in the letter.
The medics argued that it would unfair for them to get increased remuneration, when nurses and patients are struggling to get better health services.
"These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health," reads the letter dated February 25th.
"The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our remuneration," the letter says.
The group, which include; 213 general practitioners, 184 specialists, 149 resident medical doctors and 162 medical students said the cash should, instead, be redistributed to the the country's health system.
"We believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Quebec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end," the letter says.
"We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be canceled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec."
A report published by the Canadian Institute for Health Information in 2017 indicates that a physician in Canada is paid $260,924 ($339,000 Canadian) by the county's Ministry of Health per year on average.
A family physician receives $211,717 ($275,000 Canadian), while a surgical specialist is paid $354,915 ($461,000 Canadian).

Ngai, atiatia. Haiya, angels still exist on this Earth. You mean to tell me that these people have turned down money? Me as a mugikuyu can not understand!! A tour for all gikuyus and most Kenyans and I include parliamentarians,pastors, bishops, Uhuru, Raila and all the wanna-be kenyans is warranted. Question is, would they leave Canada when time comes for them to exit or they would be illegals? And why does Miguna x2 want to come back to Kenya? Is he forfeiting all this for Baba? We need service delivery and planing Kenya MPS basic Salary should be like 5k then hii ya parliament they should clock in and out for additional allowance absentism no pay..wafanye Job no need to pay most guys who just technically show up and disappear..in Bunge..I call it free Money no sweat just win by any means..and yr check for 5 years iko

In Africa we take the pay hike, open a private clinic and show up at your hospital job on Friday only for 2hrs to butcher the wrong patient, loot hospital equipment and funds if you can get your hands on them and develop a split personality.. rude to the patients at the hospital and pleasant to the ones at your clinic.

@mugikiyu the reason why sometimes I find Diasporas comments bin pathetic is u we should see things beta that many back home,juu mnaishi natumeishi nje n Wr beta informed about situations both majuu n home.Usa,Canada,uk have existed for close to 200 yrs n they went thru the same shit Wr going today as Kenyans or Africans so I get sick to see when we give some comparisons btw the west n poor Africa!But that doesn’t excuse that we need to do beta in Kenya to have good quality life where everyone is kinda happy n taken care off.What sucks in Kenya is the mpigs n other leaders salaries too high yet they do nothing when somebody like a teacher,doctor,nurse is supposed to b earning more that our stupid politicians.
What you forget is that your experience abroad is NOT every other person's experience...the dreams you had and the future you had and have now is YOURS, not mine, not any other mugikuyus. If you made your OWN 'wise' decision to invest and return as you chose, WHY do you think you are the ONE to tell....angrily and abusively so, other Kenyans what to do with their lives? If you can't resist the urge to drum it on, and in there braggadish, do it respectively. I've seen other returnees write in and give a very informative, respectful and balanced op-ed.
