South African schools are set to begin teaching Kiswahili following the country's government approval.
South Africa's Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga on Monday announced that Kiswahili has been approved as the second language to be offered to students in public, private and independent schools.
“This was approved by the Council of Education Ministers (CEM). There are currently 15 nonofficial languages listed in the national curriculum statement as optional subjects," said Motshekga.
"These include French, German and Mandarin. There is unfortunately no African language in the list of languages. Kiswahili is a bantu language with lexical and linguistic similarities with many African languages spoken in the continent.”
Motshekga noted that Kiswahili is Africa's third most spoken language after English and Arabic.
“Kiswahili has the power to expand to countries that never spoke it and has the power to bring Africans together. It is also one of the officials languages of the African Union. We are confident that the teaching of Kiswahili in South African schools will help to promote social cohesion with our fellow Africans."
The implementation of languages is set to start in 2020.
Kiswahili is mostly spoken in East African countries including Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It has also spread to DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Mozambique, and South Sudan.

Language is a human right. It's time for Kenya to declare Kiswahili the official language. " By taking people's language, you kill and destroy their mental individuality and their creativity". It's time for Kenya to have a public vote and serious discussion about what language will remain official in Kenya for posterity. This administration needs to have an official agenda for our language's. Also, Kenya needs to have a budget for our cultures and languages. Thank you South Africa for at least thinking about posterity. This is a great achievement for South Africa. Let our leaders follow. We we go back to our God given languages. God help Kenya!!!
This is the kind of news I would hope to come from African Union. But its great news nontheless. Yes spreading Swahili has a potential for creating "universal african language".
When I was in collage,on learning that I was from Kenya, a Nigerian student approached me and said" some stupid teacher in Nigeria wanted us to learn Swahili, and we refused because we did not see any value in it..."
I asked him if he- would like to see african nations united as one? he said that wont happen. Then I told him, I hope that not all Nigerians thought like him...
Yes our own african language would be great. That's how we garner respect in the international community; when we present our own...
Next will be shading off foreign names, like Charles, Maxwell, winterbottom.Notice Iam not touching bibical names because some africans are convinced that these names liken them to the biblical characters.I will not argue that point since Iam not achristian. But would it not be nice to see mostly african names in newspapers, conferences, presentations, and books?
I have yet to see a mzungu,or now Chinese name their kids, Kipchoge, even though he is a heck of an athlete.I wait to be corrected?
Interestingly, in the excitement of having Obama as the first black president, afew wazungus in the europian block named their kids Obama. But,I hardly saw that naming-excitement in USA. Infact,I have yet to meet an american born child named Obama...I think as the excitement died,so did the naming.I guess my point is that, its only us,as africans to keep our names alive, just like mzungu,or mwarabu keeps his,to name afew.
Yaaaaaaawn
Why are you yaaaaaawning? This is uplifting for Africa.
We as black pple many of us are brainwashed by the west or mzungu mentality. We don’t believe in ourselves at all!Wr not positive about our countries or continent because we love uzungu mwingi.Wr so much brainwashed such that we will die taking our kids to the west for degrees or masters instead of taking them to any african country! We r so much brainwashed that we think speaking English is a swag or ur the best!We even followed the white Jesus of Europe who was brot to us n introduced to us??Wr so much brainwashed by the uzungu we want to remain in the west working like donkeys thinking we cannot get sick or die while in this nations compared with here in Kenya.May ngai Wa kirinyaga come to our rescue.Southafrica thumbs up n yes we need to make Swahili our official language in east Africa n anybody who wants to move in this country’s must study Swahili sit for the test n if he passes he is given visa if he fails no visa.
Nawaunga mkono nyinyi wote.
@Ndugu Anos. Hongera sana.
Ajabu! Do! Masalaale!
I'm starting to appreciate South Africa' leadership. It makes sense for continental Africans to connect. I wish the black Diaspora would also learn this east African language. Somebody needs to bring the learning software to amazon asap.
