Nigeria has confirmed its first coronavirus-related death, bringing the total number of fatalities in Africa to 54.
The death was announced through Twitter on Monday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
The agency said the deceased is a 67-year-old man who had traveled to the United Kingdom for a medical procedure and had underlying medical conditions including multiple myeloma, diabetes and was also undergoing chemotherapy.
As of Monday, March 23rd, Nigeria, the most populous African country, had confirmed 36 cases of Covid-19.
On Saturday, Nigerian authorities announced they will close two main international airports in the cities of Lagos and Abuja effective Monday midnight in a bid to tame the soaring number of coronavirus cases.
Nigeria has the eighth-highest number of infections in the continent behind South Africa (402), Egypt (327), Algeria (230), Morocco (143), Burkina Faso (99), Senegal (67), and Cameroon (56). Two patients have recovered in Nigeria.
