British human rights lawyer Karim Khan has been elected as the International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor.
Khan, who represented Deputy President William Ruto when he faced crimes against humanity charges at the ICC, garnered 72 votes in a secret ballot—10 more than the threshold.
He trounced Fergal Gaynor of Ireland (42 votes), Spain’s Carlos Castresana Fernandez (five votes), and Francesco Lo Voi of Italy (three votes) during the election held on Friday.
Khan, whose nine-year term at The Hague-based court starts on June 16th, takes over from Fatou Bensousa of the Gambia, who has served in the position since 2012.
Khan has vast legal experience in international human rights issues and previously served as Legal Officer in the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and as a Legal Adviser at the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
Apart from Ruto, Khan represented former Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura at the ICC, where he faced criminal charges relating to the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

Khan should prosecute the actual 07/08 PEV murderers. He can easily nail both muuaji Raila and jambazi Kibaki with both thugs Uhuru and Ruto as prosecution witnesses. He should also charge kina Kiai,Mutua & Co.with obstruction of justice and misleading prosecutors Ocampo and Bensuda which led to prosecution of WATU WA MIKONO instead of real sponsors and benefactors of the said crimes.
A friend of Ruto in high places. Hes building bridges at high levels. Stars are lining up
Karim Khan is a great defense lawyer.
CONGRATULATIONS, now let's see whether money will dilute his judgment as a prosecutor.
Ai...another win for WSR....or is it?
