This morning, numerous air travellers in Europe woke up to find themselves in the wrong country due to the disruptive effects of Storm Isha on flights in Western Europe.
Last night, the journey by air became a daring expedition for individuals travelling between Ireland and the UK. The airports in these areas were severely affected by a storm, causing significant disturbances on the runways due to extremely strong winds, which reached speeds of up to 90 mph. To prioritize safety, numerous planes heading westward had to redirect to alternate airports in mainland Europe instead of landing at their intended locations.
Ryanair faced a major issue with their base in Dublin, where an astonishing 166 flights were cancelled on Sunday. The airport also had 36 diverted flights and 34 instances where planes had to abandon landing and try again. These numbers show the extraordinary challenges faced by aircraft trying to travel to and from Ireland.
A Ryanair flight, FR555, departing from Manchester and bound for Dublin, deviated from its planned route and landed unexpectedly at Paris Beauvais. The flight, which usually takes around 30 minutes, was extended to a lengthy two-and-a-half hours due to this diversion. Similarly, another Manchester-Dublin flight underwent over three hours of travel, swerving between locations. It seemed to circle over Dublin without any attempt to land, then proceeded to make a detour in Belfast before circling above Glasgow. Ultimately, it landed in Liverpool, a mere 31 miles away from its initial departure point.
Flight FR816 was originally scheduled to travel from Shannon to Edinburgh. However, it ended up flying to Scotland before diverting to Cologne, Germany. This unexpected change caused a considerable delay, resulting in the flight arriving in Cologne late at night, despite its intended departure time from Dublin at 3.35 p.m. Similarly, a Lufthansa flight from Munich to Dublin also faced disruptions. It had to perform a go-around and return to Munich.
