Coalition of Rebel Lawmakers Plans Political Movement Ahead of 2027

A group of about 70 young Kenyan MPs from both the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja coalitions is planning to launch a new political movement aimed at challenging President William Ruto’s bid for re-election.
The group seeks to prevent the concentration of power between President William Ruto and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga. Known as the "Wantam philosophy," this movement represents a generational demand for greater involvement in national politics. The MPs argue that existing political alliances have failed to represent the interests of Kenya’s large youth population.
The movement was formally launched at a church service in Embakasi East, organised by MP Babu Owino. A nationwide campaign is planned, beginning with events in Busia County. Key figures leading this initiative include Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who is also the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), as well as MPs Anthony Kibagendi, Caleb Amisi, Obadia Barongo, and Joshua Kimilu.
Their efforts highlight growing dissatisfaction within ODM, especially regarding the party’s possible quiet support for President Ruto’s second term. This has already sparked internal disagreement and public criticism. Senator Sifuna has openly criticised any cooperation between ODM and the current government. His comments have drawn strong reactions, including calls for his resignation.
Professor Makau Mutua, a constitutional adviser to President Ruto, suggested that Sifuna’s position was no longer tenable. Sifuna, however, defended his stance, accusing Mutua of avoiding key issues such as government accountability. This movement signals a wider trend in Kenyan politics where younger leaders are increasingly challenging established parties and demanding a greater role in shaping policies.
Their campaign is not only about opposing Ruto’s re-election but also about criticising a political system they see as excluding young people and failing to deliver meaningful reforms. If Raila Odinga endorses Ruto, as some speculate, it may cause divisions within ODM and hasten the rise of new political groups.
While Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has warned that only Raila has the national influence to effectively challenge Ruto, and that any movement without his support may struggle, the young MPs remain determined.
