Kenyan-Born 20-Year-Old Dies in FatalAlabama Crash on Way to Work

A 20-year-old Kenyan-born man, George N. Mathu, died on 14 August after his vehicle overturned and caught fire on Interstate 459 in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, while he was driving to work.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred at about 5.20 a.m. Emergency responders pronounced Mathu dead at the scene.

Mathu’s death has left his parents, John and Josephine Mathu, his four siblings, relatives and friends mourning his sudden loss.

Mathu was a 2024 graduate of Thompson High School, where he was remembered by classmates and teachers as humble and hardworking. He was also active in his Catholic faith, serving as an altar boy at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Montevallo.

He was a member of Jumuiya Juniors Alabama, a youth group that brings together young people from the Kenyan diaspora. Through the church and the youth group, Mathu built close friendships and became known for his kindness and generosity.

His death has also prompted Kenyan families across the United States to support the Mathu family. Members of the diaspora have offered prayers, condolences and financial assistance towards the funeral arrangements.

The family has expressed gratitude to the Vestavia Hills rescue team and to those who have supported them following Mathu’s death. A memorial service and vigil will be held on Friday, 28 August, at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church from 6 p.m.

The funeral Mass will take place at the church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 29 August, followed by burial at Montevallo Cemetery. The services are expected to bring together members of the local parish and the wider Kenyan diaspora as the family and friends remember Mathu.

Mathu is survived by his parents and four siblings. His family and friends are remembering him for his compassion, humility and the relationships he built within his church, school and wider community.
