Mama Mirriam Waruguru King'ori, Kenya's Social Media Star Who Lived Across Five Generations, Dies
Mama Mirriam Waruguru King'ori, popularly known as Maitu Wa Ndirangu, has died after a remarkable life that spanned more than a century and saw her become a beloved matriarch and famous social media star in Kieni, Nyeri County.
Waruguru was a centenarian who lived well beyond 100 years and was believed to have been among the oldest living Kenyans at the time of her death. Her extraordinary life stretched across generations, leaving behind a family legacy spanning five generations.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua eulogized her and paid tribute to the elderly matriarch in a post shared on social media.
“I have learnt of the passing of Mama Mirriam Waruguru King’ori – Wathindi, fondly known as Maitu Wa Ndirangu. She lived 127 years of grace, wisdom, legacy and rich history; a century and a quarter of learning and life.”
Gachagua described Waruguru as a woman whose influence went far beyond her immediate family, saying her life had touched generations and helped bring families together.
“Mama Waruguru was a remarkable woman who transcended five generations, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom and resilience,” Gachagua wrote.
A social media star in her later years
Despite belonging to a generation that grew up long before the internet and smartphones, Mama Waruguru became something of a social media star in her later years.
Videos featuring her alongside her great-grandson, Dickson Ndirangu, attracted significant attention online, with many of the clips drawing large numbers of views and reactions on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Her online fans knew her by the name Maitu or Maitu wa Ndirangu.
The videos offered glimpses into her personality, family life and the special bond she shared with younger generations. They also introduced her to audiences far beyond her home in Kieni.
Through Dickson's posts, Mama Waruguru became a familiar face to social media users who were fascinated by her extraordinary age, wisdom and interactions with her descendants. Her story offered a rare glimpse into a family spanning generations — from a woman born more than a century ago to younger relatives growing up in the digital age.
Gachagua highlighted the extraordinary family legacy she leaves behind.
“She leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning two generations of great-grandchildren and three generations of great-great-grandchildren.”
He described her as a “matriarch, a friend and a tower of wisdom in our community,” adding that her life had brought families together and touched countless people.
Waruguru's life also provided a living connection to dramatic changes in Kenyan society. Having lived for more than a century, she witnessed the country pass through generations of social, political and technological transformation.
Her longevity, combined with her visibility on social media, made Mama Waruguru an unusual and memorable figure. She represented a bridge between Kenya's past and present — a woman whose life began in an era vastly different from today's digital world, yet whose story ultimately reached audiences across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
Her death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter for a family that she helped connect across five generations, while the memories shared by her descendants — including Dickson Ndirangu — ensure that the story of Maitu Wa Ndirangu will live on.
