Murkomen Orders Police to Protect Journalists Ahead of 2027 Elections

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to ensure journalists are protected as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at a funeral service in Elgeyo Marakwet on Thursday, Murkomen said journalists should be protected, particularly when covering political gatherings where tensions can escalate. He said the media plays an important role in informing the public and holding leaders accountable, adding that intimidation and violence against journalists should not be tolerated.

Murkomen acknowledged that journalists sometimes publish reports about public figures that may be unfavourable or inaccurate, including reports about him. However, he said any grievances should be addressed through lawful channels rather than threats or intimidation.

“The journalists sometimes write things about me, even the ones I have not done, but that should not give anyone the reason to intimidate them,” he said.

His remarks followed the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, who was seized by armed men along the Gilgil–Nakuru Highway earlier in the week. Kiprotich was later found near Masinga Dam. Murkomen condemned the abduction and commended the police for beginning investigations. He said anyone found to have been involved would face prosecution.

Kanja has also ordered immediate investigations into the incident. The case comes amid concerns from journalists over assaults and harassment while covering political rallies and demonstrations.

Murkomen's directive comes as Kenya enters a politically charged period ahead of the 2027 General Election. The government faces pressure to ensure journalists can carry out their work safely and without intimidation during political events.

The abduction of Kiprotich has renewed concerns about the safety of journalists operating in politically sensitive environments. Murkomen said the police must take steps to protect members of the media as the country approaches the elections.
