Kenyans Travelling to Europe in 2026 Face Strict Schengen Visa Requirements

Kenyan citizens applying to travel to Europe in 2026 must meet strict Schengen visa requirements, including detailed financial and travel documentation.

The Schengen visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period across 29 European countries. These include France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen Area last year, but Kenyan passport holders are still required to complete the full visa application process.

Adults pay a visa fee of €90, equivalent to about Ksh13,000–15,000, while children aged between six and 12 pay €45. Children under six are exempt from the fee. All visa fees are non-refundable, including when an application is rejected.

Applicants may also have to pay additional service charges to application centres such as TLScontact, BLS International and VFS Global. These charges range from about Ksh4,472 to €40, depending on the provider.

The required documents include a valid passport, a completed application form, biometric photographs and medical insurance covering at least €30,000 throughout the Schengen Area. Applicants must also provide supporting documents such as flight bookings, accommodation details, bank statements and employment records.

Financial records are closely examined during the application process. Visa officers consider whether applicants have sufficient funds as well as whether their income and spending patterns are consistent. Large deposits made shortly before an application may raise concerns unless the applicant can clearly explain where the money came from.

Daily subsistence requirements differ between Schengen countries, but applicants are generally expected to show between €50 and €95 for each day of their stay. For a 14-day trip, this could mean demonstrating funds of about €700, or roughly Ksh100,000.

Visa decisions are usually made within 15 days, although processing can take up to 45 days during busy periods or when additional checks are required. The waiting period has also created opportunities for unofficial agents who offer visa appointments at inflated prices of up to Ksh25,000.

Authorities advise applicants to use only official application channels and avoid intermediaries offering appointments or other services for additional fees. Official channels provide greater assurance that applications and personal information are handled securely.

The requirements mean that Kenyan travellers planning trips to Europe need to prepare their applications carefully and provide consistent financial information. The Schengen visa remains necessary for tourism, education and business travel, making early preparation important for applicants seeking to avoid delays.

Travellers are advised to begin the process four to six weeks before their planned departure. This allows time to gather the required documents, secure an appointment and account for possible processing delays.
