Kenyan Passport Climbs Global Rankings, Unlocks Access to 77 Destinations

Kenyan passport holders can now travel to 77 destinations without applying for a traditional visa in advance, according to the latest Passport Index rankings. 

The country is ranked 64th globally with a Mobility Score of 77, reflecting access through visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival arrangements and electronic travel authorisations (eTA). Passport Index, which tracks global travel access, reports that Kenyan citizens can enter 37 destinations without a visa, obtain a visa on arrival in 35 countries and use eTA systems in five others. 

Together, these arrangements provide simplified entry to about 39 percent of the destinations covered by the index, while 121 countries still require a visa before departure. Several destinations in Asia and the Pacific offer visa-free entry for Kenyan travellers. 

The Philippines allows stays of up to 30 days, while Hong Kong permits visits of up to 90 days. Fiji and Vanuatu allow stays of up to 120 days, while Kiribati and Micronesia offer shorter visa-free visits.

In the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Dominica permit Kenyan visitors to stay for up to six months. The Bahamas, Grenada, Haiti and St Vincent and the Grenadines allow visa-free stays of up to 90 days.

Africa remains the most accessible region for Kenyan passport holders, supported by regional agreements and bilateral partnerships. Kenya's neighbours, including Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, are among the countries offering visa-free entry.

Ethiopia allows stays of up to 360 days, while Rwanda permits visits of up to 180 days and South Africa allows stays of up to 90 days. Other African destinations include Botswana, Mauritius, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Lesotho, Burundi, Benin and The Gambia.

Kenyan travellers can also visit countries including Ghana, Comoros, Nepal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Cambodia, Indonesia and Jordan through visa-on-arrival or eTA systems. These arrangements simplify entry but still require travellers to meet immigration requirements on arrival or obtain electronic approval before travelling.

Despite the wider access, many major destinations continue to require visas for Kenyan citizens. These include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, China and most European Union member states. The differences in travel access reflect factors such as diplomatic relations, security policies and the strength of national passports.

Passport Index advises travellers to confirm entry requirements with embassies or official immigration authorities before making travel plans, as visa rules can change.

The latest rankings show that Kenya has expanded travel access through regional and international partnerships, particularly in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. However, visa requirements remain in place for many of the world's leading economic and cultural destinations.
