Kenyan Uber Driver Charged Over Alleged Sexual Offences in Sydney

A 28-year-old Kenyan Uber driver in Sydney has been arrested and charged over alleged sexual offences involving several women.

Police said Abel Kipkemboi was arrested after detectives linked him to three separate incidents reported between January and September. At least four women have made complaints, including allegations of non-consensual sexual acts and unwanted touching.

In one case, a 23-year-old passenger reported that she was sexually assaulted while travelling in Kipkemboi’s vehicle through Sydney’s central business district.

Police said the incidents appeared to share similar patterns, leading detectives to investigate possible links between the complaints.

Kipkemboi faces five charges under New South Wales law. He has not entered a plea.

Bail was refused during his initial court appearance, with the court citing the seriousness of the allegations and concerns about the potential risk to public safety if he were released.

Uber has suspended Kipkemboi from its platform while the case is pending. The company said it was co-operating with law enforcement and maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct.

The case is due to return to the Downing Centre Local Court next week, when Kipkemboi is expected to appear by video link. Police investigations are continuing as detectives gather further evidence and interview witnesses. Kipkemboi remains legally presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty by a court.
