Kenyan Embassy urges citizens in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to register

Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Moscow has urged Kenyans in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to formally register with the Embassy amid concerns about their safety in the region.

In an advisory issued on 4 September, the Embassy said registration would help it maintain accurate records of Kenyans abroad and enable officials to communicate with them more quickly during emergencies. Kenyans living in or travelling through the three countries were encouraged to register through the Embassy’s website, email, social media channels or telephone. Those already registered were also advised to maintain regular contact with the mission.

The advisory comes as Kenyan authorities continue to address cases involving citizens who travelled to Russia after receiving offers of employment that later proved precarious. Some Kenyans have reportedly been recruited through informal agents and online platforms with promises of well-paid jobs, residency and favourable living conditions.

Russia has been the main focus of concern since the start of the war in Ukraine. Kenyan authorities have investigated cases in which citizens were allegedly recruited for military-related activities after being offered civilian employment. Some people who accepted such offers have reportedly become stranded, while others have needed urgent assistance.

The Embassy said having up-to-date information on the location of Kenyan citizens would improve its ability to respond to emergencies and provide consular assistance. It has also provided emergency contacts for Kenyans in distress: +7 968 014 8432 and +7 968 014 8433.

The advisory also highlights the risks posed by informal recruitment networks. Kenyans seeking employment abroad have faced potential exploitation when job offers are made through unverified online platforms. In Russia, some people have reportedly been promised civilian jobs before discovering that their work was connected to military operations.

In some cases, Kenyans have reportedly become trapped in military camps, suffered injuries in combat or been unable to return home. The Embassy has therefore urged those considering employment in Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan to verify job opportunities and recruitment arrangements before travelling.
