Several Feared Dead in Multiple-Vehicle Crash at Salgaa Along Nakuru–Eldoret Highway
Several people are feared dead after multiple vehicles were involved in a crash near Simba Cement in Salgaa along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway on Saturday afternoon.
Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene to evacuate victims and provide medical assistance. Footage from the scene showed extensive damage to several vehicles, including a long-distance truck.
Witnesses described the crash as serious and said traffic along the busy highway had been brought to a standstill. One eyewitness confirmed that the truck driver died in the crash, while his turnboy survived.
The Local Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) issued an alert urging motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area. The situation was further complicated by reports that local youths had blocked the highway. The blockage worsened the traffic congestion, leaving motorists stranded in long queues as rescue operations continued.
The exact number of casualties had not been established by the time of reporting.
Salgaa has recorded several serious road accidents over the years. One of the most notable occurred in 2009 when a fuel tanker overturned and spilled its contents. Local residents gathered at the scene to collect the fuel before the tanker exploded, killing 130 people instantly and leaving others with fatal injuries. The disaster claimed 140 lives in total.
The repeated crashes in the area have raised longstanding concerns about road safety and the risks faced by motorists along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway. Reckless driving, inconsistent enforcement and road infrastructure challenges have contributed to the dangers reported on the route.
