UAE Introduces New Labour Classification, Sets AED 4,000 Minimum Salary
The United Arab Emirates has introduced a nine-tier labour classification system that sets a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 for recognised professions.
The new framework, introduced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, is based on the International Labour Organization’s Standard Classification of Occupations. It covers nine categories, ranging from legislators and senior executives to technicians, service workers, agricultural workers, craftsmen, machine operators and workers in basic professions.
The reform is expected to affect many Kenyan workers in the UAE, particularly those employed in service, hospitality, construction and domestic work. The minimum salary requirement establishes a common wage floor across the classification system.
The UAE has also set income requirements for residence permits. Applicants whose employers provide accommodation must earn at least AED 3,000 per month, while those without employer-provided accommodation must earn at least AED 4,000.
Professionals seeking a Green Residence permit face a higher income requirement. Applicants must earn at least AED 15,000 per month, in addition to meeting other eligibility criteria.
The new measures form part of wider UAE policies governing employment and residency for expatriate workers. For Kenyan workers seeking employment in the country, the changes set clearer income requirements and reinforce the financial conditions attached to working and living in the Emirates.
