Oburu Oginga Discharged, Says His Health Has Stabilised
ODM leader Dr Oburu Oginga has been discharged from a Nairobi hospital and is recuperating at home after being admitted twice in August.
The 83-year-old politician confirmed on Monday evening that he had been discharged and said his condition had stabilised. Speaking to the Nation, Dr Oginga said he was first admitted on 22 August and discharged four days later, but was readmitted on 26 August after falling ill again.
His latest hospitalisation followed an illness he experienced after playing golf in Kisumu last weekend. Dr Oginga said he was now feeling better and urged people to avoid speculation about his health.
“As of now I’m at home, feeling better and people should avoid a lot of speculation on my health. As a leader, I can’t hide anything concerning my health, and when I’m sick, all of Kenya will know,” he said.
Access to the veteran politician was restricted during his hospital stay. Only his two spouses and children were permitted to visit, while several MPs were reportedly turned away. Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga was among the few leaders initially allowed to see him before doctors further restricted visits to allow him to rest.
Dr Oginga’s absence from public engagements had raised concern, particularly after he did not comment publicly on recent attacks targeting ODM leaders in Homa Bay and Migori. Anglican Bishop David Kodia criticised the violence and called for an urgent meeting of leaders from the region to address the growing political tensions.
Speaking during a church service in Kisumu, Bishop Kodia said the situation was bringing shame to the community and needed to stop. The unrest has included attacks on senior political figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during public engagements.
Dr Oginga’s illness has also coincided with a period of uncertainty within ODM, where his leadership remains important to the party. Despite his absence, he said party activities were continuing and urged supporters not to panic.
He also reiterated that he would be transparent about his health, informing the public whenever he is unwell.
