US Televangelist Pat Robertson Apologizes Over Towels in Kenya Could Have AIDS Remark

US televangelist Pat Robertson has apologized for comments he made last week on his TV show The 700 Club.

Robertson caused a huge uproar among Kenyans after he warned one of his viewers that towels in Kenya could spread AIDS. An anonymous viewer had sent an email to The 700 Club to enquire about the dangers of traveling to Kenya on a mission trip, given the current outbreak of Ebola in parts of West Africa. “You might get AIDS in Kenya, people have AIDS, you’ve got to be careful. mean, the towels could have AIDS,” said Robertson in a response to the viewer.

The 700 Club and CBN TV channel on Monday issued an apology on their Facebook page, saying the televangelist misspoke in his statement about Kenya, adding that the statement has been removed from the online archive.

Here is the statement:

On last Thursday’s The 700 Club broadcast, Dr. Robertson was responding to a viewer’s question about a mission trip to Kenya and getting Ebola. In his answer about the health dangers posed by such a trip, Dr. Robertson misspoke about the possibility of getting AIDS from towels. CBN recognized this error immediately and removed that statement from the online archive. CBN apologizes for any confusion.

I am not buying the apology. How can you "misspeak" on such a sensitive issue? It is impossible to convince any saneKenyan that the idiot did not mean what he said. Are these the so called men of God. This man can go rot in hell for all i care. Hawa hatutawaona mbinguni. So naive

Intended harm achieved!!!! Here is the play..

Say whatever you want to damage someone or something when 1000 viewer are watching/listening and apologize later online where less than 1% of your viewers can read your apology. that the game.

The same game politician play.

You really are amazing . So he makes a statement that is ignorant and racist and you want to defend him? Could he saw towels cause aids in us or is it just in Africa? Or there is no aids in USA? Come on men. He hates people like you and you want to defend him? And is hiv airborne? Since it is mostly sexually transmitted what should the message to his viewer who wants to visit Kenya be? He is perpetuating a racist view of Africa and someone like you thinks people should not be outraged by it? Go listen to him but don't tell us not to be angry with him. He also needs to go on tv and apologize there too

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@Charles....No he's not Racist.Yes am defending him.Because if Kenya need food and medicine Pat Robertson will be among the few wazungu's begging other wazungu on behalf of Kenyans for money. The man is a humanitarian, granted he says his own things and he

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

So it means we owe him a lot? Personally he has never done anything for me and I do not owe him anything, I got a big ego to just accept a few words of apology plus I have a lot of pride for my country, so please stop calling people foolish coz he is foolish enough not to give people the right advice on T.v. Trying to discourage people from coming to Kenya is not a way of helping Africa ama I think to you it is?

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@Samatha.....first,its not about U or me,it about people who are suffering in Africa and children who are dying of hunger and dieseases....second,because of the work he has and continues to do,he does deserve some respect...third,the man is entitled to hi

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

You sir/madam are the worst type of bigot, the ones who don't even know they are bigoted and carry on their scheming blatantly. No one needs Pats feigned sympathies for the poor. He is a politician out for Pat Robertson only. He probably thinks he can buy his way to heaven with his acts. The man has made outrageous comments over and over and their in lies his true self. He should get of the pulpit and head to congress where he can spew his hatred unabated! Piece of hot trash.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@bmore......WHAT DAMAGE??can U prove that allegation?....a missionary is missionary...if the want to come to Kenya nothing will stop them.So he's not advising tourist. He's was advising missionaries and his message was not politically correct, but the essen

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Rev. Should apologize in the same forum that he made the statement -on tv. I think it was reckless snd driven by racist beliefs. Does he belief there is no aids in American towels too? To defend such a man is beyond me. He hates your 'kind' and here you are defending him. You must believe the low opinion he has of you. And how exactly do you get hiv- is it air borne rev? So tell your viewers that most if hiv is acquired through sex.

Pat Robertson:

We (in Kenya) don't need your "missionaries" Pat. Keep them in the US where they are needed more than elsewhere in the world. These (missionaries) are the people who undermined our traditional African Cultures and religions by lying to us that "when you die, you will go to heaven." If heaven is settled by people like Pat Roberson, I am better off here on earth.

Let us bar these people (missionaries) from ever going to any place in Africa and undermining the little of the African languages, cultures, and religions that is left for our grandchildren to appreciate!

The record is there for all to see. This man has made a lot of controversial remarks about particular persons and peoples. Remember the Haiti remark made at the height of the worst disaster that Island ever faced? When one makes a disparaging remark about another or others and later finds it to be incorrect, he should take the whole blame and apologize and put it right. A man of God should be the first in line. The fact that you help people when they are in problems does not negate the fact. There are millions of people in Kenya who have no AIDS. Are they not entitled to be offended by the allegation? Can't Kenyans prepare "healthy veggies and meats?". How about the millions of tourists who have and continue to visit Kenya? They are the ones who need to advice those wanting to visit Kenya not Pat Robertson who says what he says within the confines of his studio.

@Joseph Mbugua...I knew Haiti was going to come up so hear you go:

Statement Regarding Pat Robertson's Comments on Haiti

CBN.com – VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., January 13, 2010 -- On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.

Are we clear!O.K!

Anyone remember the travel advisory that was given after Kibaki was elected president the first time ousting Moi? Kenyans conducted themselves in a mature and peaceful manner. The Kenya shilling had brought the dollar down to 50-something when the announcement was made... Funny how the timing of that had such an impact...

Philosophically, the difference between the likes of Pat Robertson and members of ISIS negligible. They radically adhere to religious outfits that believe that they are the only true believers; everyone else is wrong. This paradigm and way of thinking close their minds to social norms and science. Therefore, to behead someone for not converting to one's form of religion is not an issue, or to negate science and allege that one could contract AIDS from a towel in Kenya is in order.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am
