President Uhuru Voted New Chairman of the East African Community

President Kenyatta has been voted as the new Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC).

Kenyatta was elected during the 21st Ordinary Summit of the East African Community Heads of State held virtually on Saturday. This was the first-ever Summit of the EAC Heads of State to be held virtually.

He takes over from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, who has held the position since February 2019.

During the summit, Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki from Kenya was appointed as the new EAC Secretary-General for a five-year non-renewable term effective April 25th, 2021. Mutuku will succeed Burundi’s Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko, who has been at the helm since April 2016.

Justice Yohane Bakobora Masara, Justice Richard Wabwire Wejuli, and Justice Richard Muhumuza were appointed as judges to the East Africa Court of Justice (EACJ) First Instance Division with effect from February 27th.

Justice Nestor Kayobera, Lady Justice Anita Mugeni, and Justice Kathurima M’inoti of Kenya were appointed as Judges to the EACJ Appellate Division.
