Morgan State University (MSU), a historically black university in Baltimore, Maryland has launched an alumni association in Kenya.

The move is aimed at strengthening Morgan’s connection with former students and tap into their expertise.

MSU Kenyan alumni chapter was launched in Nairobi on Tuesday in an event attended by Dr. Yacob Astatke, assistant vice president for international affairs at Morgan.

Speaking during the launch, Dr. Astatke said the alumni association will be fundamental in helping MSU in exploring options for opening a virtual or satellite campus in Nairobi.

The association is expected to work with the MSU Division of International Affairs to maintain a strong link with the university.

So far, the MSU Alumni Association Kenya Chapter has at least 50 members and more are expected to join.

Margaret Mukira, the president of the MSU Alumni Association Kenya Chapter, says the association will have a big impact in the future and inspire other former students to set up chapters in their countries.

“Apart from those who live in Kenya, these alumni members are found across the world, including USA and Canada,” Mukira said.

She added: “It is a great moment for the alumni members because it is the first international chapter to be chartered at the university.”

The association targets to identify Kenyan students who can benefit from programs offered at MSU, network with other alumni across the globe, and strengthen partnerships with local universities.

“Some of the areas that the alumni will be involved with include increasing the brand awareness of the university by performing community-based activities, partnering with local universities so that the students and professors are able to collaborate with their counterparts from Morgan State University to carry out research programs together,” said Ms. Mukira.

The association is working on a partnership between MSU, Kenyatta University, and a local tech company towards developing cube satellites that can be launched into low Earth orbit to provide a range of solutions.

MSU was founded in 1867 and has over the years offered education to thousands of learners from Africa and other parts of the world.

Smart move. I don’t get why African governments done Exeter into deals with HBCU’s to help the colleges stay afloat as well as benefit it’s citizens with a quality education. My biggest regret is not going to a HBCU.

Always brainwashed to think Havard and Stanford are the only universities in US. Let people start somewhere and Morgan is not the least of them.

Morgan State or Harvard are both located in the USA. Morgan isn't an extension of Egerton or Moi or Mount Kenya University. The school also offers accredited academic programs just like your pet school Harvard.
