Kenya Airways (KQ) has cut the number of direct flights linking Nairobi to the US city of New York.
The national carrier told Business Daily that it has reduced the frequency of trips on the route from five to three per week due to low passenger demand. The demand for direct flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport has dropped following the end of the peak season in December last year.
KQ added two flights on the route in November last year to meet the rising demand ahead of the peak season when it recorded average bookings of over 70 percent per flight.
“We are now in low season and demand for travel on the route has gone down. We have had to reduce the number of flights from five to three on the New York route starting January 10th,” the airline told Business Daily.
The Kenya flag carrier has been struggling with low numbers on the Nairobi-New York route since November 2020 when it resumed operations following months of grounding due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic hit Kenya and other parts of the world, Kenya Airways was flying five times per week to the US.
The airline launched direct flights to New York in October 2018, cutting the journey to 15 hours on the long haul route tapped as part of efforts to revive its fortunes. Kenya Airways had projected that the nonstop flights to the US would boost its annual revenues by more than 10 percent in 2019 and 2020.
Being the only East African airline flying directly to the US, KQ makes it easier for passengers from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi to connect through Nairobi.

True. Change is needed. As a result of code-share,however, unfortunately it gets hard to avoid flying a specific liner when a 'multi-stop' trip is booked via an agency, unless one books a direct trip. For instance, i once expected a delta flight (going by info. on the boarding pass obtained at one of of my stops)only to learn at the last minute that the actual vehicle was KQ.
My bad.Turns out i had not read my 5yr old itinerary to its entirety. My agency, on the contrary, actually had indicated below the 'Delta airlines flight ####' with a small text that said 'operated by Kenya Airways'. Kindly disregard the old post.
This comment just shows that you have never been inside an Aeroplane. Your comment is based on ignorance and prejudice. These cabin crews are trained the same, and treat everyone the same way. I have always been treated the same friendly way, be it Lufthansa, Delta, Ethiopian, or Kenya Airways. Don't comment on something if you don't know anything about it.
Mr settled they used to be called aeroplanes kitaaambo, siku hizi wanaziita airplane. Hata apple inashindwa aeroplane ni ninii? You welcome 🤗
Settled wewe ni ng’ombe sana
You should start your own airline. I think you would do a much better job than kenya airways. With a name like collusion, you’ll have no problem filling up seats.
A business strategy primed on tokenism is bound to fail.
KQ to which I am an investor is a loss creating conduit; forever.
Why?
Those who turn the KQ wheels that hold the rubber onto the road lose nothing even when KQ makes no profits.
The problem is in the tenders and supply chain.
Titus corrupted Magadi Soda; they sold it to Indians.
That company could change the economy of a whole county, for tge better.
This red eyed clown corrupted and fleeced KQ. It needs no bailout; unless you are reading from the script of "Ivy league" clowns that remains conjoined to their alma and refuse to juxtapose their faje elitism beside Africa's monkeyism.
I would get persons who "commit" to the ideals that are relevant to KQ and use such leverage. Yes, as of now and for KQ borrowing is burrowing...digging deeper into dept!
Nice of Uhuru to have considered partnership with South Africa Airlines. Unless you isolate the thieves(they are in tenders and are political lobbyism), it would be a waste.
Tanzania Airlines operates with less loans; thanks to Magifuli. Will Raila, a supplier accept to be replaced with a cheaper supplier?
Joho is strategizing to have his noose on KPA; will he accept his firms to be replaced if they don't do better?
Enough Blacks are still in the monkey stage; they just copy...I mean " monkey See Monkey do".
It would take less than 10 years for Kenya to be a first world. Uhuru has done it right, albeit as a compromise. What if he went wholehearted for it, the way Kagame is doing?
Black man, you are your own enemy! Your poverty is a self affliction!
I no longer lose sleep for a poor man nor for victims of terminal derangement especially when they REFUSE to read!
I have no time to edit...edit it!
...govt bail out ... reduce flights..stop flights... This is no longer news. Next time just tell us when fare reduces or when KQ shares appreciate in value....at least something that helps poor investors put a penny in their pathetic pockets. KQ is just a milk-cow for the you know who...
Isn't 3 times enough already. 5 should be for later. But anything goes in some of these agencies..
Has anyone ever used KA to travel to Kenya? It’s a long flight from New York. I’d love to hear your experience. Please share. Thanks!
I've flown KQ from NBO to Schipol but continued to JFK aboard KLM. From my experience, KQ's food beats that of BA. As concerns service, Crew's performance is better compared with that of some of their on-site colleagues at NBO.
They said they are busy shipping monkey for lab testing.
Amsterdam Nairobi KQ was ok except no Ugali. Western junk food as usual. I bet Ethiopia has injera.
Ashamedly it looks like African countries are too shy to share their respective heritage dishes in their own airlines! I flew Ethiopia two times, and never saw injera there . I loved Injera last time I ate it at an Ethiopian restaurant.
That's sad. Africa nutritious organic food despite some famine is responsible for strong bones and teeth. In fact diet is partially responsible for low covid cases. South Africa suffered more because of Western kind of food chain industry
Monkey airways
They need to lower prices to increase demand. Simple thing. Match or beat Ethiopian
NO more monkey business. Very telling.
It is only Ethiopian which serves African food, on board. I remember I once flew Ethiopian from Washington DC, to Addis Ababa, for a connecting flight, still with Ethiopian, to Kenya. And we were served githeri on board. Yes, maize and beans, as my Cucu used to make it, with a 'nyungo', or earthen pot. It felt good to eat githeri inside an Aeroplane.
The other day they were increasing them, today they are reducing trips. Tomorrow they will be stopping all together. Myself I would never ever fly Kenya or African anything. Those cabin crews treat you like 💩 cause you are like them and anyone lighter or different hair texture they are treated like gold. Wacha wakae
