Former Chief Justice Mutunga Predicts a Raila-Ruto Handshake After August Elections

Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga says the country may witness another handshake after the August 9th general elections, similar to that between President Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga in March 2018.

Mutunga, who spoke on Citizen TV’s Daily Break Show, said the handshake is likely to happen between the two leading presidential aspirants Raila Odinga and William Ruto should there be a threat to peace after the forthcoming elections.

Mutunga argued that Western nations such as the US, UK, and Germany will have to mediate between the two to protect their interests.

“Of course one of the factions is going to lose and if there is a threat of peace, the foreign interests, the Germans, British, and the Americans will just tell them to have another handshake. And so, we should expect Ruto and Raila to have a handshake, consolidate their dictatorship and that’s why the issue of people’s opposition is important,” said Mutunga.

At the same time, Mutunga warned Kenyans against buying into the promises by politicians during the campaign period, saying he doubts whether the current crop of leaders cares about transforming the country.

“The important thing is to talk to the Kenyan people and tell them very clearly that these factions are not going to fulfill their promises, they have never done that in the past and they have no agenda for implementing the constitution which is a blueprint for our development,” he said.

He added: “The political space is occupied by the factions that we see and they have occupied it for the last 58 years and in those years, they have not done anything to convince me that they care about the country’s transformation.”

Mutunga, 74, served as the country’s Chief Justice and the head of the judiciary between 2011 and 2016.

Didn't know Mutunga is a senior citizen vile yuko 74 years old. Something about Ukambani public figures, they seem to look youthful kama Kalonzo Kasyoka.

I am with him. I am not with her (Martha kiume).
Raila survived on 4 handshakes since 97. But Dynasty must be degraded demolished and destroyed never to rise again so Kenya can move forward.

Ofcourse we know kizeee is always crying it was stollen n rigged n he knows this is the last time to stand for elections at his age.I have said it here many times that majority of young people will not vote for somebody who is heading 80 years old with bad history of causing chaos n economic sabotage juu ya pawa greed.Kenyans will come out to finish this dynasties families who have stollen public funds since 1963 for themselves not thinking about common mwanachi. So am sure Kenya Kwanza will make sure votes difference will b over 2m ndio hiki Kizee kisilete unjinga.Ruto is not an easy leader he will jail raila if he wins then Kizee kianze maunjinga zake.Young guts below 45 tunjitokezee kwa wingi we send husler nation to the state hse by 8am.

I agree with Mutunga especially when he refers to known candidate who have shown nothing different apart from oiling his own pockets for the last 58 years. He only can make noise when he is not eating, not when am not eating! He has remained silently absent in-spite of so much corruption in the last 4 yrs because he is busy eating too. You could have heard him in full blast if he wasn’t.
In fact ODM party should be made to relinquish the Ksh661 million public money awarded to official opposition party by treasury because the opposition died some 4 years ago. It joined Jubilee government in stealing.
Bottom line is this old geezer, our great grandpa is not a liberator for the many as some have come to claim. He is a typical liberator for himself. It’s always about him.

Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words.
The eyes of two of the people in this pic are focused directly on the handshake itself. They were seriously 'reading' it.
