Kenya Gets Greenlight to Take on Gangs in Haiti

In response to a plea from Haiti's prime minister for assistance in restoring order, the UN has endorsed Kenya's proposal to lead a multinational security force in the country.

Haiti is no stranger to gang violence, but things took a turn for the worse following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Gangs currently have a firm grip on significant parts of the country, rendering the populace exceptionally frightened and resulting in several hundred deaths. To reestablish order and disarm the gangs, UN Secretary-General António Guterres underlines the urgency for a more forceful tactic. The United Nations (UN) Security Council, similarly, has passed a resolution allowing the mission to last one year with a review scheduled after nine months.

The adoption of the resolution calls for the establishment of a fresh force that will partner with Haitian law enforcement and hold combined security measures as well as possess the authority to make arrests. Moreover, the focus will be on creating an environment that enables the conduct of fresh elections in Haiti since 2016. Haiti's Foreign Minister, Jean-Victor Geneus describes this decision as a glimmer of hope for its people whose miserable plight has persisted for far too long.

Kenya's new objective is to establish peace and security by deploying an intervention force to neutralize armed gangs and protect civilians. It also hopes to assist in the reconstruction of Haiti's essential infrastructure and in establishing a stable government. The Bahamas, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda have confirmed their participation in the mission, and CS Mutua states that security personnel from Spain, Senegal, and Chile may join as well. He anticipates that the force will be operational by the beginning of next year.

At present, Haiti finds itself embroiled in a turbulent security and humanitarian situation, one that the UN Secretary-General Guterres refers to as a "living nightmare." Large portions of the coastal capital, Port-au-Prince, nestled amidst the mountains, are either under the control of heavily armed gangs or regularly subjected to their terror. These gangs, known by names like "Kraze Barye" (Barrier-Crusher) and "Gran Grif" (Big Claw) in Haitian Creole, have engaged in a range of criminal activities such as robbery, looting, extortion, kidnapping, rape, and murder over the past two years. Equipped with smuggled automatic weapons, primarily from the US, these gang members often outmatch the local police force, sometimes resorting to burning their vehicles and stations.

Speculation circulates among analysts that Kenya is fulfilling the demands of the US in a bid to gain favour with the global superpower. To further aid the mission, the US has pledged $100 million (£82 million) in financial support with Canada also offering funding.

The outcome of this operation will be interesting to watch. I have a feeling the Americans will stop funding it once the foreign "forces" causalities become too much.

State sponsored mercenaries is what they are. I still can't believe the government would sell it's people like this, but he did promise to get foreign employment for Kenyans. They are already dieing in the middle east so why not in the west. A salutary effect is he doesn't have to pay these poor saps any more than he ordinarily would. Can you imagine if they were paid per diems, travel, housing and other allowances like the honored thieves in parliament. Only the devil knows how he will misuse the funds the US will allocate for this mercenary mission.

This is not right. UN and the west have been in Haiti since 1700- especially France. Haiti has been their baby.
Kenya is John come lately fronting a black man's face against a fellow black man.
Kenya needs to take care of its issues at home before going outside of its territory.
Let's wait and see and remember Haiti is Blackman 's firstborn to fight against colonialism from France.
Let Kenya learn the history of Haiti.
Haiti is of priesthood lineage. Kenya or any other force involved will not win against Haiti. Not in this times.
May the will of God prevail in Haiti.

Gangs have always been part and parcel of the Haitian political system for ages. Papa Doc Duvalier had hired many as part of an elite force called Tontons Macoutes. Their job was to make sure no one challenges his rule. Other presidents followed suit and the reason why they have now taken over most of the country is because the present regime refused to play ball with them. They are jobless and you all know black people have to eat ugali (most Haitians look like they could be from Nyanza). If the goal of this operation is eradicate them without working with the international community to strengthen Haiti's economy, it will just be a matter of time before they resurrect and continue where they left off. Ruto needs to be careful with the high cost of unga in Kenya, we might have our own Tonton Macoutes at some time in the future.

@ Mlandizi, you are right. And this is something all governments know, but they still do it,and that is, war of ideology cannnot be work by the sword,or fire arms. That just silences the "noise" but does not solve the problem.
To be honest, Iam not sure exactly what Kenya police are supposed to do there. In other words when will we know that the mission has been accomplished?

Let the country burn no natural resources zero contribution to world economy always begging with their stupid backward voodoo practices.Foreigners can never stabilize a country unless they completely take over .It failed in Somalia and how a bunch of Africans or African looking foreigners is suppose to instill fear and order on former slave descendants who kill for sport is expecting miracles.Again this is a country that has zero importance to the west especially USA who have the capability to restore order but do not care because there is no oil or any other exploitable resource

This is giving away Kenyan lives just for selfish benefit of a few leaders. In 1994-1995 the USA sent 25,000 military personnel who did not succeed in fixing the violence. In 2004 Brazil sent 37,000 military personnel to fix the same problem. And now Kenya a third world country. Poorly equipped , corrupt and oblivious of the language and culture sends a handful 1000 police in 2023 to a gang that is mercilessly barbaric. All in the name of $100 million. Haitian problems can only be solved by Haitian 🇭🇹 people. All the rest is propaganda and senseless intentions of sacrificing the Kenyan police personnel.

Can't fight voodoo power with gun. It needs more potent spiritual powers. Haiti is complicated nation, convoluted history. It's like DR Congo, and coincidentally Haitians believe they came from Congo, Angola.

My hope is that we should not hear,or read about any nonsense about human rights abuse by Kenya police. These brave soldiers are facing dangerous thugs who may not value human life.So they have to be dealt with brutally, and with deadly force. The gangs dont seem to care about human rights.Give them their own medicine.
