Kenyan Domestic Violence Survivor Dan Makataya to Receive Reconstructive Surgery in California

A Kenyan police officer who survived an acid attack is in the United States to undergo reconstructive surgery to restore his ability to breathe.

Dan Makataya is scheduled to receive the operation on 20 September at the Alessi Institute for Facial Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California. The surgery will address severe damage to his nasal passages, which has caused significant breathing difficulties.

The procedure is being organised by Face Forward International, a non-governmental organisation based in California that provides surgical and psychological support to survivors of domestic violence. Makataya is being hosted during his stay by Glory Riungu, a Kenyan living in the US who has offered him accommodation throughout his treatment.

Makataya was attacked in September 2013 following a domestic dispute. The assault, which took place shortly after he returned home from night duty, involved acid being poured on his face.

He later reported that his wife, who was arrested but later released on bail, attempted to electrocute him by flooding the floor and switching on an electrical current. Neighbours intervened after hearing his calls for help and took him to hospital.

The attack left Makataya permanently blind and with multiple medical complications. Despite several surgeries in Kenya, his nasal passages have gradually closed, making breathing increasingly difficult. Makataya has continued to speak publicly about his experience, saying he has forgiven his estranged wife and remains committed to pursuing justice.
