The family of Tracy Nyariki, a 31-year-old Kenyan woman found murdered in the United States, has shared their perspective on the events leading to her tragic death.
Nyariki went missing shortly before Christmas while residing in Newark, Delaware, and her body was discovered on December 20 in a vehicle registered to the primary suspect, Nobert Matara. The New Castle County Police Department launched a search for Nyariki after her employer reported her absence from work over several days.
The family suspects that Matara, allegedly motivated by jealousy, is responsible for her death. Nyariki had recently celebrated a traditional wedding with another partner, and her family believes this event may have incited Matara to violence, although the relationship between Nyariki and Matara had ended some time ago.
Family members express their shock over Nyariki's death, emphasizing that she had been in good spirits and eagerly anticipating the Christmas festivities. One of her sisters notes that Nyariki had moved on with her life following their breakup. Relatives recount the harrowing timeline of events, from the initial reports of Nyariki's disappearance to the devastating news of her death.
"My auntie told us they were looking for her. We were eventually told she had been found but we were never told to what extent. On Saturday, one of our cousins told us she was missing. We were very worried, and on Sunday night we were informed that she was no more." one of Nyariki's relatives says.
The family has faced several hardships over recent years, including the death of Nyariki's mother in 2013 and her father's debilitating stroke in 2010, which left him confined to a wheelchair. Nyariki's uncle speaks of her relatively new employment as a nurse in the US, which had brought hope to the family.
Through her job, she was able to provide vital support for her father's medical needs and assist with family obligations back in Kenya. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Nyariki's family is facing logistical challenges in repatriating her body from the United States to Kenya for burial.
