Kikuyu Elders Urge Ruto to Accept Criticism and End Police Brutality

The Kikuyu Council of Elders (KEC) has publicly rebuked President William Ruto's administration, calling for de-escalation and dialogue in response to escalating youth-led protests.

Their statement follows renewed public unrest sparked by allegations of police brutality and perceived government inaction. The KEC, at a press conference held over the weekend in Kiambu, voiced deep concern over mounting casualties and reported disappearances linked to the ongoing protests.

Triggered by the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang' whilst in police custody, the demonstrations have reportedly resulted in at least 19 fatalities, according to local sources. Among the deceased is Boniface Kariuki, allegedly shot at close range by uniformed officers.

James Nene, Secretary General of the KEC, emphasises the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, urging the government to prioritise dialogue over the use of force.

"You have a vast educated, restless and tribeless youth under your watch. Extend friendship to them," Nene said, framing criticism as an inherent aspect of leadership.

KEC Chairperson Wachira Kiago echoes these concerns, asserting that violent suppression of young demonstrators undermines Kenya's democratic principles. "It is painful to wake up and find young people being killed. They can be talked to," Kiago said, lamenting what he described as an erosion of trust between the state and its citizens.

The elders also criticise Ruto's decision to construct a church within State House grounds. While acknowledging the importance of spirituality, they question the appropriateness of such an act in a secular republic, warning it risks alienating non-Christian communities.

"He ought to have sought advice before building it," Kiago noted.

Allegations have also been made by one elder regarding the orchestration of chaos during demonstrations through the deployment of hired thugs by unnamed government officials.
