Natembeya Dismisses Gachagua’s Self-Declaration as Opposition Flagbearer

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he will lead Kenya’s opposition in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Radio Citizen on Monday, Natembeya described Gachagua’s declaration as premature and without basis. He stressed that the opposition has not yet agreed on a presidential candidate and said any such decision must be reached collectively.
“No one should be declaring themselves flagbearer,” Natembeya said, adding that the selection process must consider a candidate’s public support and ability to mobilise campaign resources.
Gachagua had announced his presidential bid a day earlier during a church service, stating that he intends to lead the United Opposition and will be on the ballot in 2027. The former deputy president said he is committed to reforming key sectors such as healthcare, housing, and education. He also reaffirmed his eligibility to run for office despite previous impeachment efforts.
“If Kenyans elect me as President, if God wishes, I want to do only one thing: to restore the Kenyan state and fix the health system,” Gachagua said.
The dispute points to deeper divisions within the opposition, which is still working to build internal unity while criticising President William Ruto’s administration. Natembeya noted that the opposition’s immediate focus is to challenge government policies he described as harmful to the economy and the welfare of citizens.
“Our common goal in the opposition is to remove the President from office,” he said, insisting the effort is driven by concerns over governance, not personal differences.
