Heavy Rain Expected Across Multiple Kenyan Regions on Tuesday

Persistent rainfall is forecast to continue across much of Kenya until Tuesday, 30 December, with authorities warning of an increased risk of flooding in several regions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said wet conditions would persist from Monday morning into Tuesday, affecting both inland and coastal areas. The Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the south-eastern lowlands and the coast are expected to receive sustained rainfall during the period.

In a series of advisories, the Department warned that continued rainfall on already saturated ground could lead to flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. It also forecast strong south-easterly winds of up to 25 knots in parts of Marsabit County, which may worsen conditions in affected regions.

Rainfall totals of more than 20–30mm are expected in several counties, with the heaviest activity forecast to peak on 29 December before easing slightly the following day. Areas highlighted for heightened concern include Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, southern Kitui, Taita-Taveta and Kwale.

The National Transport and Safety Authority has issued a separate alert to road users, warning that heavy rain and fog are reducing visibility and making roads slippery. Motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians were advised to reduce speed, keep safe distances and avoid overtaking where visibility is limited, especially on roads prone to flooding.

Authorities have urged the public to monitor official updates as conditions may change quickly.
