US Embassy Opens Applications for 2026–2027 Fulbright Teaching Programme for Kenyans

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has opened applications for the 2026–2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Programme, offering Kenyan educators the chance to teach in American universities for one academic year.

The programme is supported by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and aims to strengthen language education while promoting cultural exchange. Selected participants will travel to the United States to teach their native languages and share their cultures with students and local communities.

In addition to classroom teaching, FLTA participants will lead conversation groups, take part in campus and community activities, and enrol in courses to improve their English skills and teaching methods. The programme lasts between nine and ten months and is open to applicants from Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.

The FLTA forms part of the wider Fulbright exchange framework, which supports international academic cooperation through teaching, research and study opportunities. The Fulbright programme also includes the Foreign Student Program, which provides grants each year to international students pursuing postgraduate studies and research in the United States.

Applicants must meet specific academic and professional requirements. Candidates are expected to hold the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record. The application process requires three letters of reference, official academic transcripts and recognised English language test results, such as TOEFL or IELTS. Where applicable, GRE or GMAT scores may also be required.

English proficiency is a key requirement. Recommended minimum scores include 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 79 to 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, or an overall score of 6.5 on the IELTS. US citizens and individuals holding dual nationality with the United States are not eligible to apply.

Successful applicants will receive a range of support benefits, including J-1 visa sponsorship, financial assistance, health insurance and access to professional and cultural enrichment activities during their stay in the United States. The programme offers Kenyan educators international exposure and professional development opportunities that can contribute to the growth of language education at home.

It also supports long-term academic links between Kenyan and American institutions. Applicants are advised to contact the Fulbright office in Nairobi for detailed information on eligibility and host university placements.
