Moi International Airport Evacuated Briefly After Suspicious Bag Detonated in Controlled Explosion

Normal operations resumed at Moi International Airport on Sunday after security officers evacuated the terminal and conducted a controlled detonation of an unattended bag found near the VIP lounge car park.

Police officers on patrol discovered the bag and immediately activated emergency procedures. Passengers and staff were cleared from the area while a specialised bomb disposal unit was deployed to assess the potential threat.

Airport Sub-County Police Commander Evans Mose said officers secured the location while waiting for the specialised team to arrive. The bomb squad later carried out a controlled detonation, producing a loud blast that briefly alarmed travellers in the vicinity.

No injuries or structural damage were reported following the explosion. Authorities said the operation was conducted with caution and involved specialised equipment designed to reduce risk.

Investigators later found that the bag contained tools, including spanners, pliers and a tyre pressure pump. Police believe it may have been left behind unintentionally by a passenger and are working to identify its owner.
