Kenyan Entrepreneur Debis Kilori Wins Leadership Honour at Pamoja Awards UK

Kenyan entrepreneur Debis Kilori received a leadership honour at the Pamoja Awards UK last weekend, recognising his work in entrepreneurship and community development within the Kenyan diaspora.

The annual Pamoja Awards UK brought together Kenyan professionals, entrepreneurs, and community organisers living in Britain. Kilori, founder and chief executive of Deroots Group, has built a profile in the diaspora through business initiatives, mentorship programmes, and civic engagement.

His recognition at the awards reflected not only his entrepreneurial work but also his role in supporting community development. Speaking after the ceremony, Kilori said the award represents years of sustained effort. He noted that the recognition also reflects his growing focus on civic leadership.

That focus strengthened after he completed the We Lead for Legacy Civic Leadership Programme in Manchester last year. The six-month programme trains community leaders to take a more active role in civic life. Kilori was one of 42 participants selected for its third cohort.

The graduation ceremony was attended by senior leaders from across Greater Manchester, including Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Deputy Mayor Kate Green. Kilori said the programme had a lasting impact on his approach to leadership.

He credited the organisers, Flourish Together CIC and She Leads for Legacy, with delivering what he described as a transformative experience focused on courage, consistency, and service. Although there has been discussion about whether he may pursue elected office in the future, Kilori said his current focus remains on community work.

He said he intends to continue strengthening diaspora networks and supporting local communities through his business and civic initiatives.
