How Single Mothers in Kenya Can Obtain Birth Certificates for Their Children

Kenya has introduced a clear process for single mothers to obtain birth certificates for their children, with applications handled through Civil Registration offices and Huduma Centres.

The Civil Registration Department, working with Huduma Centres nationwide, has set out procedures intended to make registration accessible while preventing fraud. Applicants must provide key documents before registration can proceed. These include a clinic or antenatal card confirming the child’s birth details, such as the date and place of delivery.

Mothers are also required to present a national identity card and proof of marital status, along with additional documents such as religious certificates where available. The application process involves completing a birth registration form at a Huduma Centre or Civil Registration office.

Submitted documents are then verified by officials. Once approved, the birth certificate is usually issued within ten days. The cost ranges from KSh90 to KSh130, keeping the service within reach for most families.

Late registration is allowed but subject to stricter checks. Registrars carry out a vetting process to confirm the accuracy of the information provided. Adults applying for registration after the age of 18 must submit further evidence, such as school leaving certificates, letters from educational institutions, or identification documents, to establish their identity over time.

Huduma Kenya advises that late registration should be avoided and encourages timely applications.
