Australia Opens New Scholarship Opportunities for Kenyan Students

Australia has announced a new round of scholarships for students from Kenya and other developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

The programme, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, offers successful applicants the opportunity to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. It aims to provide academic training while equipping participants with practical skills to support development in their home countries.

 The department stated that the initiative is designed to encourage graduates to contribute to national progress after completing their studies. Recipients of the Australia Awards Scholarships will receive a comprehensive package. This covers full tuition fees, return air travel and an establishment allowance for accommodation, books and study materials. 

Scholars will also be provided with a living stipend, health insurance for the duration of their studies and additional academic support where required. Graduates must leave Australia within two years of completing their course. Failure to do so may result in repayment of the full scholarship cost.

Applications for eligible African countries, including Kenya, close on 30 April 2026. Other participating countries include Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Applicants are required to submit enquiries and applications through the official programme contact.

The announcement comes as international education policies face increased scrutiny. In contrast to Australia’s expansion of access, the United Kingdom has introduced stricter measures. 

On 4 March 2026, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the suspension of student-sponsored visas for four countries, citing concerns over misuse of the asylum system. Reports indicated that many individuals who entered the UK legally later sought public support, with some being housed in hotels.
