Kenyan Diaspora in the UK and the US Hold Memorials for Two Community Members

Members of the Kenyan diaspora in the United Kingdom and the United States have held memorial services to honour the deaths of Leonard Mambo Kitavi and Basillisa Jelimo.

In Cumbria, England, mourners gathered on 27 March at Windermere Catholic Church for a service in memory of Leonard Mambo Kitavi, known as Lenny, who died earlier this month in a road accident near Kendal. Friends, colleagues and fellow Kenyans attended, remembering his generosity and warmth.

Following the service, attendees moved to The Badger Bar, his final workplace, for a more informal celebration of his life. Kitavi’s family described him as “kind, loving and caring” and asked the community to keep them in their prayers.

In Dallas, Texas, the Kenyan community met on 29 March at Upendo Baptist Church to commemorate Basillisa Jelimo, who passed away during the spring break period. The service highlighted her work with the Widow Favoured Foundation, where she supported widows with companionship and assistance.

Friends and family recalled her humility and compassion, and her daughter, Sheila Lagat, received support from those attending the service.
