Police Probe Death of Chinese Worker at Talanta Stadium Construction Site

Police in Nairobi are investigating the death of a Chinese national found unresponsive at the Talanta Stadium construction site on 30 March.

The man was discovered in a communal latrine on Monday morning by a chef employed by the Chinese management team overseeing the project. Security personnel at the site responded and, with the assistance of other workers, transported him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities reported that the body had a minor injury on the right side of the head. The cause of death has not yet been established. Nairobi Police Chief Issa Mohamud said investigators are examining both natural causes and the possibility of foul play.

Police officers have since visited the construction site to assess the scene and collect evidence. Witnesses are being interviewed as part of the investigation. The body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause of death.

Talanta Stadium is a major infrastructure project intended to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The 60,000-seat facility has been under construction since March 2024 and is reported to be 86 per cent complete, with completion scheduled for June 2026. The project has also been the subject of public discussion due to plans to rename it Raila Odinga Stadium.
