Huduma Kenya: Parents' Names on Birth Certificates Cannot Be Changed

Huduma Kenya has clarified that the names of parents recorded on a birth certificate cannot be changed after registration.

The agency said other details may be amended through the prescribed legal process, subject to supporting documentation. The clarification was issued during a live public forum streamed on Huduma Kenya's social media platforms, where officials responded to questions about changes to birth certificates.

They said a parent's name entered at the time of registration remains a permanent part of the record. "Kindly note that parent's name in a birth certificate cannot be changed," a representative said.

Officials explained that while parental names cannot be altered, other information on a birth certificate may be corrected through the Civil Registration Services under the Ministry of Interior. These changes include correcting spelling mistakes, adding or changing names, updating a gender marker and correcting the date of birth.

Applicants seeking amendments must submit a formal application together with supporting documents. Depending on the type of correction, these may include a hospital birth notification, parents' identification cards and an affidavit sworn before an advocate.

Cases involving major discrepancies, such as completely different names or dates, may require additional verification and can take longer to process. Applicants may also be asked to provide supporting records, including school documents or baptismal certificates, to confirm consistent use of the correct information.

The agency did not clarify whether typographical errors in a parent's name can be corrected. This leaves uncertainty for families whose birth certificates contain differences between a parent's name and other official records. Huduma Kenya's stated position remains that parental names recorded on a birth certificate cannot be changed.

Birth certificates are key identity documents used for education, employment, travel and inheritance. Huduma Kenya said the restrictions on changing parental details are intended to protect the integrity of official civil records, while allowing genuine errors in other parts of the certificate to be corrected through the established process.
