New Evidence Emerges in Death of 21-Year-Old After Nairobi Rooftop Fall

Detectives in Nairobi have ruled out third-party involvement in the death of 21-year-old Margaret Wambui after reviewing CCTV footage from Altura Apartments in Upper Hill, where she fell from the rooftop on 18 July.

Investigators said the footage shows Wambui entering the 34-storey apartment building shortly after 8 pm before going to the rooftop. She remained there for more than 40 minutes, taking photographs near the edge of the building. 

Police said the recordings show her standing close to the ledge shortly before the fall. At the time, the security guard responsible for patrolling the rooftop had briefly left the area to use the washroom.

A post-mortem examination at the Nairobi Funeral Home found that Wambui suffered multiple severe fractures in the fall and died instantly on impact. Members of her family attended the examination with an independent pathologist and were informed of the findings.

Although investigators say there was no foul play, Wambui's family has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to complete the inquiry and provide a full account of what happened. They have also requested access to the CCTV footage to help them understand her final moments.

"There is CCTV footage showing what happened during the incident. We would like to review it as a family so that we can understand exactly what transpired and find closure," said Maina Gathogo, a relative.

Wambui's death has left her family and friends mourning the loss of a young woman who was pursuing a career in hospitality. Funeral arrangements are under way as they await the conclusion of the investigation.
