Kenyan Doctor Asha Koriryo Sigei Appointed Chief Pathologist in the US

Dr Asha Koriryo Sigei has been appointed Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of the Iredell Memorial Laboratory in the United States, marking a significant milestone in a career that began in modest circumstances in Kenya.

Dr Sigei grew up in the neighbourhoods of Matobo, Mombasa Dogo, Mlango and Nyagacho, where financial constraints and limited resources presented significant challenges. She pursued her education at Kipsigis Girls High School before studying medicine at the University of Nairobi, where she developed a strong interest in pathology.

Pathology plays a central role in healthcare by providing the laboratory analysis that supports medical diagnosis and treatment. Pathologists examine blood, tissue and other samples to identify disease and provide information that guides clinical decisions. Dr Sigei chose to specialise in the field, building a career based on scientific expertise and diagnostic accuracy.

After further training in the United States, she progressed into senior leadership in laboratory medicine. As Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of the Iredell Memorial Laboratory, she oversees laboratory operations and works with teams of scientists and clinicians to maintain high standards in diagnostic services.
