Mukurwe-ini Residents Protest MP John Kaguchia's Arrest, Demand His Release

Tensions rose in Mukurwe-ini Constituency on Monday as residents protested the arrest of their Member of Parliament, John Kaguchia.

Demonstrators gathered in Gikondi demanding his release after he was detained outside Royal Media Services offices in Nairobi. Residents assembled in Gikondi carrying placards and branches while calling for Kaguchia's release.

They accused the government of pursuing politically motivated charges and said the arrest would not influence the region's voting decisions ahead of the 2027 General Election. One aspiring MCA told the crowd that the community would not be intimidated or coerced, reflecting the views expressed by many of the protesters.

Kaguchia was arrested in the early hours of 3 August after an overnight standoff with officers believed to be attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. Investigators allege that remarks he made during a recent political rally were inflammatory.

The MP has denied any wrongdoing, saying his comments were taken out of context and misrepresented online for political purposes. He also argued that if his remarks had broken the law, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission should have issued him with a summons, which he says did not happen.

His lawyers confirmed that he is being held at Kamukunji Police Station and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. Political allies criticised the circumstances of the arrest. Leaders from the United Opposition, including members of the Whiper Party and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), described the action as politically driven.

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua said the arrest reflected the actions of governments that use the criminal justice system against political opponents. He added that the move was likely to strengthen support for Kaguchia within the opposition. His legal team is seeking his release on bond.

The arrest has also renewed debate about the consistent application of the law. Some residents questioned why Kaguchia had been detained over what they described as minor remarks while other politicians aligned with the government, who have faced similar accusations, have not been arrested. They said this perceived inconsistency had increased frustration in Mukurwe-ini and pledged to continue demonstrating until the MP is released.
