Kenya Opens New Consulate in China – Big Relief for Kenyans Living in Guangzhou

Kenya has officially opened a Consulate General in Guangzhou to strengthen trade and investment ties with China while improving consular services for Kenyans living in southern China.

The new mission was inaugurated by Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr Korir Sing’oei during a ceremony attended by Ambassador Willy Bett, Consul General James Muhati, officials from the Guangdong Provincial Government, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders and representatives of the Kenyan diaspora. Dr Sing’oei said the consulate would strengthen cooperation with one of China's leading economic regions. 

He added that it would serve Kenyans working, studying and doing business in the area while providing a direct point of contact for Chinese investors interested in opportunities in Kenya. Guangzhou is one of China's main centres for manufacturing, technology and international trade. 

The city and the surrounding provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Guangxi play an important role in global supply chains. By establishing a diplomatic presence in the region, Kenya aims to expand commercial ties and improve access to consular services. 

The new office will allow Kenyans in southern China to obtain services such as passport renewals and official certificates without travelling to Beijing. The consulate is also expected to support Kenya's economic interests. Guangzhou has long attracted Kenyan traders who source manufactured goods, and it is home to one of the largest African business communities in China. 

The permanent mission is intended to strengthen trade links and encourage more structured investment partnerships. Kenyan officials say it will also help Chinese companies exploring investment opportunities in sectors including infrastructure, technology and agriculture.

The opening comes as Kenya continues to face a significant trade imbalance with China. Government figures show that imports from China increased from KSh361.37 billion in 2020 to KSh671.17 billion in 2025. Over the same period, Kenya's exports to China declined from a peak of KSh28.96 billion in 2023 to KSh16.92 billion in 2025.
