Gachagua Rejects Claims DCP Is Weakening Opposition Parties

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has rejected claims that his party is working to sideline smaller opposition parties, saying Kenya’s democracy is stronger when multiple political parties remain active.

His remarks followed criticism from Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi, former Meru Governor Peter Munya and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, who opposed calls for regional parties to dissolve and join DCP. Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on 5 August, Gachagua said claims that DCP intended to absorb or weaken other parties were misplaced. He said every political party had the right to recruit members, campaign and compete for public support.

Gachagua attributed DCP’s growing support to sustained grassroots campaigns. He outlined a series of meetings held across Laikipia, Nyandarua, Kiambu, Kajiado and Narok, saying the party’s progress was the result of consistent engagement with voters. He added that other parties should strengthen their own campaigns instead of blaming DCP for its increasing support.

The former Deputy President also referred to previous cooperation with other opposition parties. He said he had stepped aside in favour of a Democratic Party candidate during the Mbeere by-election despite DCP having a strong candidate. According to Gachagua, the decision showed his willingness to support coalition partners when it served a shared political objective.

He also appealed to Muturi, Munya and Kivuti to continue working with him towards the common goal of defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Gachagua said opposition parties could eventually unite behind a single presidential candidate while continuing to field candidates from different parties for other elective positions.

The disagreement highlights the challenge facing Kenya’s opposition as it prepares for the 2027 election. While opposition leaders agree on the need to work together against the ruling administration, parties also want to maintain their own identities and political influence. Gachagua said DCP’s growth should be seen as the result of grassroots mobilisation rather than an attempt to weaken its allies.
