Ngemi Cia UK Announces New Approach to Engage Kenyans in Diaspora

With weeks to go before the Ngemi Cia UK Homecoming Festival, organisers have announced a stronger focus on involving the diaspora community in shaping this year’s event through online and in-person engagement sessions.

Speaking during a live interview with diaspora broadcaster Halima Ahmed, Ngemi Cia UK Director Lady K, whose real name is Karen Njuguna, said the organisers want to move beyond simply sharing information with attendees. Instead, they plan to create opportunities for community members to contribute ideas, ask questions and help influence the festival’s direction.

“It is not us talking to them; it is us talking with them,” she said, describing the organisation’s commitment to collaboration.

The approach reflects the organisers’ view that diaspora festivals are not only cultural celebrations but also spaces where communities strengthen their sense of identity and belonging. By encouraging participants to help shape the programme, Ngemi Cia UK aims to ensure the festival continues to meet the needs and interests of Kenyans living abroad while remaining relevant to future generations.

The festival programme will include live performances by leading artistes, DJs and MCs, alongside Kikuyu cultural dances, fashion showcases, storytelling sessions and exhibitions. Traditional and contemporary music will feature throughout the event, while Kenyan dishes including nyama choma, ugali and popular street food will be available. Family activities are also planned to cater for visitors of all ages.

Ngemi Cia UK has become one of the UK’s leading celebrations of Mount Kenya culture, attracting thousands of people each year. This year’s emphasis on greater participation marks a change in how the festival is organised. 

The event aims to preserve cultural traditions while reflecting the experiences of Kenyans living abroad.
