Charlene Ruto’s Koito: Inside the Traditional Kalenjin Engagement Ceremony

Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto, is at the centre of a traditional Kalenjin engagement ceremony, known as Koito, being held at Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County.

The ceremony brings together members of the Ruto family, political leaders and other guests for a significant rite in Kalenjin marriage traditions. Koito is the formal stage at which two families recognise and bless the union of their children.

Traditionally, elders from the groom’s family visit the bride’s family to discuss bridewealth and confirm the couple’s readiness for marriage. Unlike civil or church weddings, Koito places families and the wider community at the centre of the marriage process. 

The ceremony typically involves greetings, negotiations, blessings and cultural performances, with elders guiding the proceedings. The Kilgoris ceremony has brought together several senior political figures. 

Those reported to have attended include Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei and Bomet Woman Representative Linet Toto. The scale of the gathering has also been evident through the presence of motorcades and helicopters, giving the family occasion a high public profile.

Guests have worn traditional and African-inspired clothing, while music, dance and food have reflected elements of Kalenjin culture. For Charlene and her fiancé, the ceremony marks an important personal milestone while also showcasing a longstanding marriage tradition.

Koito remains an important part of contemporary Kalenjin culture, despite the growing prominence of civil and church weddings. The ceremony continues to provide a setting for families and communities to affirm cultural values and strengthen social ties.
