Huduma Kenya Explains How to Correct Wrong Names on Birth Certificates

Huduma Kenya has clarified the procedure for correcting birth certificates where children were mistakenly registered under their grandfather’s name instead of their father’s.

The agency said such errors can be corrected, but the process is not automatic and must follow a formal procedure overseen by Civil Registration Services. Parents are required to present the child’s birth certificate at a civil registry office or Huduma Centre. Officials will assess the document to establish the nature of the error, including whether it concerns incorrect parental details or another issue relating to the registration of names.

After reviewing the certificate, the registrar will advise on the appropriate procedure and the supporting documents required. Huduma said the amendment process depends on how the names and parental details are recorded on the existing birth certificate, meaning each case must be assessed individually.

The agency stressed that amendments can only be made where there is clear evidence of an error. A parent’s name cannot simply be changed after it has been recorded on a birth certificate.

“Kindly note that a parent’s name in a birth certificate cannot be changed,” Huduma said.

The distinction is intended to ensure that genuine clerical or factual errors can be corrected while protecting the accuracy and integrity of civil registration records. The amendment process may require documents such as affidavits, identification documents for the parents and other records that support the requested correction. 

Civil Registration Services uses these requirements to establish that an amendment is based on a genuine error rather than an attempt to make an unauthorised change to official records. Birth certificates are important legal documents used in matters including education, employment, travel and inheritance. An error in a birth record can therefore affect several aspects of a person’s official documentation.

For families affected by registration errors, the process provides a formal route for seeking corrections. However, Huduma’s guidance also underscores the importance of providing accurate information when a child’s birth is first registered, as changes to official records are subject to established legal procedures.
