Kenyan in Canada Warns How Quickly Immigrants Can Become Homeless Abroad

A Kenyan living in Canada has warned that immigrants can quickly become homeless after sudden setbacks, regardless of their education, employment or financial position.

Moses Kiprono, who regularly speaks about diaspora issues on social media, said several factors can leave immigrants without stable housing. These include the breakdown of marriages and relationships, substance abuse, expired immigration documents and sudden job losses.

He also identified health emergencies, rising debt, domestic violence and family disputes as risks that can contribute to homelessness. Legal problems and complications involving sponsorship can also destabilise an immigrant’s housing and financial situation.

Kiprono said the lack of strong support networks makes such situations more difficult for many immigrants. Some live far from relatives or close friends who could offer temporary accommodation during a crisis. Evictions, accidents and fires can therefore leave people with few immediate options.

Business failures can create similar problems, particularly for immigrants who have invested significant amounts of money in ventures that later collapse. The loss of a business can leave them without both an income and a secure home.

Kiprono also warned against judging people’s financial circumstances based on their social media presence. Photographs of cars, houses and holidays can create an impression of prosperity while concealing serious financial or personal difficulties. A single crisis, he said, can quickly undermine that appearance.

He urged immigrants to prepare for unexpected setbacks by saving money, keeping their immigration documents secure and building reliable support networks. He also called for greater empathy towards people experiencing homelessness, noting that some were financially stable before an unforeseen crisis changed their circumstances.

His warning comes amid other accounts of Kenyans facing hardship abroad. One Kenyan man in Atlanta became homeless after his marriage broke down, with his situation made worse by ill health. His case, which was widely shared online, led to calls for greater support from the Kenyan community.

Kiprono’s message is that living abroad does not guarantee financial or personal stability. He urged immigrants and their families in Kenya to recognise the risks, prepare for unexpected difficulties and support those whose circumstances have changed suddenly.
